Helping
Others Motivates Volunteer Husband and Wife Team
William
and Juanita Brittford dedicate two full days a week to driving
seniors to various appointments as volunteers for the
Community Transportation Program. "We love the work. We
get to meet so many wonderful individuals who not only need
the ride, but benefit from having someone to talk to."
-William Brittford, Volunteer Driver

"I feel like we get as much out of our volunteer
experience as the clients do out of the ride itself. We have
become attached to so many of these folks, it is a wonderful
way to give back to the community."
-Juanita Brittford, Volunteer
The Community Transportation program began
in Columbus in 1974 and has since grown along with the growing
number of seniors in Franklin County. According to the 2000
Census over 138,000 residents living in Franklin county were
age 60 and older, representing 13% of the county’s
population. By the year 2020 it is projected that over 226,000
county residents will be age 60 and older - a 63% projected
growth from the 2000 Census results. The Community Transportation
program is already operating at capacity. "We
need additional vehicles and volunteer drivers to compensate
for the growing number of elderly in our community who rely on
us."
- Carl Herring, Community Transportation Program
Director
